Step into island life and make a real impact by protecting Lombok’s endangered sea turtles alongside a passionate local team. This hands-on conservation experience puts you right at the heart of marine protection. Depending on the season (since turtles don’t nest year-round), your days could include identifying turtle species, collecting and safeguarding eggs, monitoring nests, or witnessing the unforgettable moment when hatchlings make their journey safely to the ocean.

About This Experience

Indonesia is one of the world’s most important regions for sea turtle conservation, home to a rich diversity of species including the Olive Ridley, Green Sea Turtle, Hawksbill, Loggerhead, and Leatherback turtles. Across the archipelago, turtles return to the same beaches—places like Java, Bali, Sumatra, and Papua—to lay their eggs. These nesting sites are incredibly fragile and need constant protection from human impact to ensure successful hatching. However, sea turtles here face real challenges. Coastal development, pollution, and climate change are damaging their habitats, while illegal poaching and accidental capture in fishing gear continue to threaten their survival. Turtles have fascinating nesting behaviors. The temperature of the sand determines the gender of hatchlings—warmer sand produces more females, while cooler sand produces more males. With rising global temperatures, this balance is at risk, making conservation work more important than ever. These incredible creatures can travel vast distances across oceans using Earth’s magnetic field. Built for life at sea, they glide effortlessly with streamlined bodies and flippers, feeding on jellyfish, seagrass, and other marine life. Despite their resilience, they face constant threats from predators, habitat loss, and human activity. Sea turtles are endangered due to both natural and human-driven factors, including: Habitat Destruction: Coastal development and pollution damage nesting and feeding areas. Illegal Trade: Turtles and their eggs are harvested for meat, shells, and exotic pet markets. Fishing Gear: Entanglement in nets and longlines can cause serious injury or death. Climate Change: Rising temperatures disrupt nesting conditions and hatchling survival.

Aims & Objectives

  • You’ll support the protection of sea turtles—especially loggerhead turtles—and their nesting habitats through a range of meaningful activities. This includes maintaining protective hatcheries, assisting in the treatment of injured turtles, helping preserve beaches from pollution, and collecting important data to better understand turtle behavior and their environment.
