Step into the rhythm of rural Japan and get your hands in the soil alongside local farmers. Learn how to plant, harvest, protect crops from wildlife, and preserve food for the colder months — all while sharing real moments with the people who keep these traditions alive. In Otaki, a quiet mountain village, many young people have moved to the cities, leaving behind an aging community. The locals truly value the extra help — but even more, they cherish the connection, the conversations, and the chance to pass on their knowledge to a new generation.

About This Experience

Escape the rush and reconnect with what truly matters in the peaceful mountain village of Otaki. This is your chance to experience rural Japan beyond the surface — working side by side with local farmers and becoming part of a community that’s holding onto generations of tradition. As younger generations leave for the cities, small family farms rely on extra hands to keep going. Here, you won’t just observe — you’ll actively take part, learning traditional farming techniques while living the everyday life of the village. Each season brings a different rhythm. Warmer months are all about being outdoors — planting, harvesting, and caring for the land. In colder months, life shifts indoors, focusing on food preparation, preservation, and seasonal tasks like snow clearing. Beyond the farm, you’ll experience authentic Japanese culture through crafts, shared meals, and simple daily moments that create real connection. This is slow living at its best — meaningful, grounded, and deeply human. Perfect for those ready to unplug, learn something new, and contribute to a community that truly appreciates your presence.
